What to Expect as a New Patient
Starting care should not be confusing. Here is exactly how your first visit with Louisville Behavioral Health Systems works — what happens before you arrive, what to bring, what it costs, and how to find us.

Your first visit, step by step
- 1
Request an appointment
Send the appointment request form or call (502) 454-8800. It takes about two minutes and you do not need to share medical details.
- 2
We verify your insurance and call you back
Within one business day we check your benefits, explain what your plan covers, and answer your questions before you commit to anything.
- 3
Complete your forms before you arrive
We send your intake paperwork ahead of time so your first visit is spent with your clinician instead of a clipboard.
- 4
Your first appointment
Plan on 60 minutes for a psychiatric evaluation or 50 minutes for a therapy intake, in our Newburg Road office or by secure telehealth.
What to bring
- Photo ID
- Your insurance card
- A list of your current medications and doses
- The name and contact information for your primary care provider
- Your completed intake forms
What it costs
We verify your benefits before your first visit and tell you what your expected responsibility will be, so there are no surprises at the front desk. Most plans require a copay for behavioral health visits. Self-pay rates are available on request — just ask when we call you back.

New patient questions
- How soon can I be seen?
- It depends on the provider and the type of visit. We respond to every request within one business day and will tell you the soonest available appointment when we call, including any telehealth openings.
- Do you accept my insurance?
- We accept TRICARE, Medicare, and most major commercial plans. Send us your carrier in your appointment request and we will verify your benefits before your first visit.
- Do I need a referral?
- Most plans do not require a referral for behavioral health, but some do. We check this when we verify your benefits and tell you if your plan needs one.
- Can I do my first visit by telehealth?
- In many cases, yes. Some visits need to happen in the office, including TMS therapy. We will confirm which option applies to you when we schedule.
- What if I need to reschedule?
- Call (502) 454-8800 as early as you can and we will find another time. Advance notice helps us offer your slot to someone else who is waiting.
- Do you see children and adolescents?
- Please call us at (502) 454-8800 to ask about age ranges for each provider.
